Arizona Hospitals Within IASIS Healthcare LLC Systems Achieve Rapid ROI with STANLEY Healthcare's Inventory Management Solution

SpaceTRAX Inventory Management System targets expensive supply areas to increase operational efficiency and drive down costs

WALTHAM, Mass., September  30, 2014 — STANLEY Healthcare, a market leading provider of visibility solutions and analytics  for the healthcare industry, today announced that the Arizona-based supply chain team within IASIS Healthcare LLC Systems is reducing supply costs, preventing waste and improving data management with its implementation of STANLEY Healthcare's SpaceTRAX Inventory Management System in its cath labs and IR rooms.

Arizona's Mountain Vista Medical Center and St. Luke's Medical Center—both part of IASIS Healthcare LLC System—have a total of eight (8) cath labs and IR rooms where they perform roughly 7,400 cases each year. These hospitals were facing some of the most common challenges surrounding inventory management.  Supply costs in these areas represent a significant portion of the hospital's operating budget.  With new technologies continually being introduced, these areas of the hospital require not only a large variety of supplies, but also very high-cost items, where physicians and other clinicians handle a wide variety of cases.

"Managing high-dollar inventory is challenging—especially when balancing goals for cost control, quality and clinician satisfaction," said Jeremy Owens, Arizona Director of Materials Management for IASIS Healthcare LLC. "Our hospitals must keep an ever greater variety of supplies on the shelf because of the patient volume being pushed to the cath labs, the variety of cases with new technologies being launched, and an increasing volume of vascular cases."

Following a thorough investigation of solution options in 2009, Owens and his team selected STANLEY Healthcare's SpaceTRAX® Point of Use™ Inventory Management System for its automated and bar-coding functionality. It was ideal for managing inventory in procedurally based settings. They then upgraded to SpaceTRAX v2 in 2011 to take advantage of the enterprise-based features and reporting. Most recently in 2012, Mountain Vista Medical Center and St. Luke's Medical Center started taking advantage of SpaceTRAX's charging interface. This has dramatically improved staff efficiency and procedure/supply patient charge capture while more effectively monitoring and managing supply costs in the cath lab and IR rooms.

"The SpaceTRAX solution attacks expense, commonly $30,000-$50,000 in obsolete inventory in any given quarter. We saw an immediate return," said Mr. Owens.  Additionally, SpaceTRAX has allowed them to overcome both common and complex barriers to effective inventory management in these settings.  "We've also been able to achieve that delicate balance between controlling costs and maintaining innovation, quality and physician satisfaction."

IASIS Healthcare LLC's Arizona hospitals are a model of best practices in cath lab inventory management—demonstrating how to accurately order supplies, reduce and better manage supply costs, improve data management, and prevent waste.

"Using SpaceTRAX, we have the ability to effectively and proactively manage our cath lab/IR inventories. We're no longer wasting money, space or time on seldom-used items. We're able to track our stock—and our costs—at a very granular level. And, most importantly, we're better able to ensure that our physicians have the supplies they need to provide high-quality care to our patients," Owens concludes.
