Shands Greatly Improves Efficiency Across Multiple Healthcare Facilities with Asset Management and Temperature Monitoring by Stanley Healthcare
- Shands Decreases Occurrences of Lost Equipment in its Emergency Department by 99.3%
- Reduces Hours Spent Searching for Missing Assets by 98.8%
- Solutions Leverage Shands’ Existing Wi-Fi Network
FRAMINGHAM, Mass., October 2, 2012 – Stanley Healthcare today announced that Shands, a health system affiliated with the University of Florida Academic Health Center, has successfully implemented the AeroScout Real-Time Location System (RTLS) across three of its facilities. Shands uses Stanley Healthcare’s RTLS solutions to improve operational efficiency and staff satisfaction by automating asset tracking and temperature monitoring. Initial results from a study in the Emergency Department include a 98.8 percent reduction in hours spent searching for missing items and a 99.3 percent reduction in occurrences of lost items.
“It used to take us an average of 20 to 30 minutes to find a particular medical item within Shands at UF, Shands Cancer Hospital at UF and the Shands Medical Plaza – consuming enormous amounts of staff time,” said Brad Kowal, Data Centers and RTLS Technologies Director at Shands. “Since implementing AeroScout, we’ve eliminated almost all of that time across the enterprise and calculated a 99 percent time reduction in a study of our Emergency Department. Since we track down hundreds of items per day, that’s a tremendous time savings that frees up staff to focus on patients.”
Shands is a private, not-for-profit organization affiliated with the University of Florida. It is part of UF&Shands, the University of Florida Academic Health Center, with campuses in Gainesville and Jacksonville. The Shands family of hospitals and programs includes two teaching hospitals, Shands at UF and Shands Jacksonville; two specialty hospitals, Shands Rehab Hospital and Shands Vista behavioral health; a network of outpatient rehabilitation centers; and two home health agencies.
Shands originally implemented AeroScout Asset Management to track approximately 1,000 assets – with a combined value of $1.1 million – across five departments, including the real-time location of Workstation on Wheels carts from a central command center. When a doctor or nurse needs a cart, a team member in the command center uses the solution to quickly find one and deliver it to the appropriate location.
Quickly recognizing the broader benefits of the solution, Shands expanded it to track a range of equipment, including wheelchairs, stretchers and other high-value or limited-quantity items across several more departments. The solution leverages Shands’ existing Wi-Fi Network and is integrated with Shands’ building management system. Shands plans to double the number of items being tracked over the next year.
Shands also worked with Stanley Healthcare and FieldServer Technologies, an integration provider, to natively integrate AeroScout temperature and humidity Wi-Fi Tags with Shands’ building management system. This automatically monitors temperature and humidity levels and saves staff from the time and effort of manual tracking. Shands has currently deployed the solution to monitor liquid nitrogen coolers and plans to continue to use this new wireless monitoring solution elsewhere within the enterprise.
“It brings us great pride that Shands has drastically reduced the amount of time its staff spends searching for medical equipment and has increased its operational efficiency,” said Scott McFarland, Senior Vice President of Sales at Stanley Healthcare. “This results in more time for patient care and increased satisfaction of staff – and that is representative of the benefits experienced by hundreds of hospitals around the world using our RTLS solutions.”
